One of the questions I get a lot is: What order am I supposed to apply my skincare products?
The easiest rule to remember is this:
Always go from the most watery consistency to the thickest consistency.
If you use a facial oil, that usually comes towards the end of your routine. And in the morning, sunscreen is always your last step.
That being said, always read the instructions on your products. Some active ingredients may need to be used in a specific way or may require you to wait before applying the next product.
Morning Skincare Routine
Start with your cleanser. Then layer your products from lightest to thickest:
- Cleanser
- Mist
- Eye cream
- Watery booster or essence
- Serum
- Moisturizer
- Facial oil, if your routine calls for one
- SPF
For example, if you have a very watery booster and a serum with more of a light gel consistency, the watery booster goes first. Then you continue working your way up to your moisturizer.
Your sunscreen always goes last in the morning.
Evening Skincare Routine
In the evening, I usually recommend starting with a double cleanse.
Your first cleanse can be an:
- Oil cleanser
- Cleansing cream
- Cleansing milk
- Micellar water
This helps remove sunscreen, makeup and the buildup from your day. Then follow with your second cleanser according to your skin type and preference — a gel, foam, cream or another formula that works well for your skin. Browse our Cleanser collection.
After cleansing:
- Mist
- Eye cream
- Watery booster, if you use one
- Serum or corrective treatment
- Moisturizer
- Facial oil, if needed
And that's really it.
The most important thing is not to memorize a complicated list of steps. Look at the consistency of your products and remember:
Watery products first. Thicker products afterwards. Oil towards the end. SPF always last in the morning.
And always read the instructions on the product itself, especially when using active ingredients such as retinol, exfoliating acids or other corrective treatments. Some products may have specific instructions about how, when and in what order they should be applied.
